Upstate Art House

Between Bucharest, Milan, Paris and New York, architect and interior designer Crina Arghirescu Rogard has developed a refined and cosmopolitan vision of architecture and design. Trained at the Politecnico di Milano, she honed her skills alongside renowned figures such as Charles Zana in Paris and Adam Tihany in New York, before founding her own studio in 2013. Since then, she has cultivated an approach where European sophistication meets timely boldness, through both residential and commercial projects.

In upstate New York, Crina transformed a mid-century house into a cultural sanctuary for an art collector, creating unexpected juxtapositions and daring interior compositions. The project is the result of a carefully curated and dynamic dialogue between some of the most visionary minds in furniture design, architecture, and art. It brings together works by artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, John Chamberlain, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, and Deborah Kass, alongside iconic designers including Jean Prouvé, Gaetano Pesce, and Charlotte Perriand, to name just a few.

The property features expansive bay windows and a circular inner courtyard, allowing abundant natural light to flow through and create seamless connections between indoor and outdoor. White walls and floors throughout the house provide a neutral canvas for the artwork and furnishings, allowing them to shine. The living room offers an eclectic mix of vintage and contemporary pieces: Gio Ponti’s Luna lamps accompany a 1960s lacquered wood coffee table by Superstudio for the Italian furniture brand Giovannetti. The ensemble resonates with a brushed stainless-steel daybed by Maria Pergay, enhanced by the meticulous upholstery work of our craftsmen.

We also completed other upholstery projects on several pieces of furniture in the residence. In the office, armchairs designed by Charlotte Perriand and Jean Prouvé are displayed alongside works by Felix Gonzalez-Torres hanging on the walls. The collection also includes chairs by Ettore Sottsass, while the master bedroom features a ‘Le Chat F574’ armchair by Pierre Paulin and a striking vintage 1960s bed created by Joseph-André Motte. Each piece has been carefully restored by our upholsterers. Our seamstresses also brought their expertise and enthusiasm in crafting various hand-painted curtains, hung from lacquered white technical tracks in the bedrooms and bathrooms. The windows are dressed with matching shades, while the soft wave-fold draperies blend seamlessly into the rest of the property.

“In our Upstate Arthouse project, their upholstery and drapery work beautifully complemented the client’s expansive art collection and the layered, expressive design of the home. Jouffre brings not only technical excellence but also a refined sensitivity that elevates every space we work on together” confides Franchesca Rousseas, Project Coordinator at Crina Architecture.
